Changes to answer keys for open-ended response tasks

The following changes have been made to the answer keys of tasks that require an open-ended response  from students–tasks such as Fill-In-The-Blank and Short Answer.

When a student is in “Attempt” mode, there is no feedback provided and the number of attempts remaining is displayed in red at the top of the task window. All grades are recorded to the gradebook but only those that fall within the allotted number of attempts are used to generate the student score.

When a student has exceeded the maximum number of attempts allowed to respond to a task, the task reverts to “Practice Mode” and feedback is provided as a “Possible Answer”. This is a model answer provided by EMC, but not necessarily the only correct answer.

The student is free to continue to answer the task in Practice Mode as many times as they wish, but attempts made in this mode do not affect the score reflected in the gradebook. It will be obvious to the student that they are in Practice Mode as it is displayed at the top of the task in red.

Additional functionality is in development which will provide teachers with visibility into each attempt by the student – teachers will be able to see student responses to each attempt at a question. That functionality should be available very shortly.
