How do I create a course? (ELA – Passport – 2019)

When a teacher logs into Passport for the first time, they will be taken to the Courses page. The Courses page is the home page for a teacher. (On subsequent logins, the teacher will be taken to the last course they were working in.)

After logging in to Passport for the first time, a blank Courses page will appear. A course is necessary in order to enroll students or view teacher and student resources. From the teacher home page, click the  Add Course button:

Shows teachers the "Add Course" Button

(If you have already added courses, the Add Course link appears at the top right above the list of classes:)

In the Add Course dialog box, fill out the following required fields:

Program: Select the program you’ll be teaching in this course.

Confused about Mirrors and Windows 2016 and Mirrors and Windows 2020? Click here for additional information

Mirrors and Windows 2020 is only available for grades 6 through 8 for the 2019-20 school year. If your school has access to both editions (2016 and 2020), we recommend using Mirrors and Windows 2020 for grades 6 through 8.

Mirrors and Windows 2016 is available for grades 6 through 12 in the 2019-20 school year. Teachers creating grade 9 through 12 classes should use Mirrors and Windows 2016. If your school needs access to Mirrors and Windows 2016, please contact Customer Support.

Once your class is created, you will not be able to change the program. To change the program for a class, please contact Customer Support.

Level: Select the level you’ll be teaching in this course. Note: you will be able to assign and view resources from other levels, in addition to the level you select.

Title: Use a title that helps define the course(s) that you’ll be teaching. Students will look for this course name to verify they are in the correct course.

Co-Teachers: Passport now allows for the addition of a co-teacher. Co-teachers will have the same functionality as the primary teacher. This field is optional but does allow for the selection of multiple co-teachers if necessary.

Start Date / End Date: Select a start and end date for this course. On the End Date, this
course will deactivate so that a teacher cannot assign or evaluate new material and students cannot make changes to assignments. Both teachers and students will be able to access a deactivated course for up to 4 years after the course End Date.

Set Max Attempts: Select 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or Unlimited attempts. This selection will apply to the number of attempts a student will have to complete an eBook activity. This selection will act as a course default for any new eBook activity. This selection can be changed for a particular assignment or activity. Unlimited attempts will default any new eBook activity to a practice mode, allowing the student unlimited attempts on an activity.

Add Course: If you unable to select Add Course, please verify that all required fields are completed. Otherwise, click the Add Course button to complete your course creation.

Notes on choosing the right textbook level

Selecting the desired level of the course will activate only that level of the curriculum. When a teacher activates a particular grade of the textbook, students will only see the curriculum from that grade unless content is assigned from other grades. Passport allows teachers the choice of selecting the level of text that is best for their students. By activating multiple levels of a textbook, students will have access to more learning activities. Note: students will only see the primary textbook for the class level on their Passport login page. Other resources are accessed by clicking the Resources icon.

Offering all levels of EMC School’s programs allows a teacher to easily differentiate their instruction. Advanced students can be challenged while other students review from previous books without restructuring the entire curriculum. Similarly, a teacher can easily adapt EMC School content to their curriculum by pulling from different levels over the course of a single school year. Selecting the desired level of the course will activate only that level of the curriculum. If a teacher activates Level 1 of the textbook, students will only see Level 1 of the curriculum. Passport allows teachers the choice of selecting the level of text that is best for their students. By activating multiple levels of a textbook, students will have access to more learning activities.
